About DEMOLITIONS In NIGERIA
Discriminatory demolitions in Nigeria are a pressing concern, disproportionately affecting the urban-poor and residents of informal settlements. In Lagos State, the government has demolished over 1,000 houses since 2016, displacing thousands of families. At least 30,000 people were forcibly evicted in Lagos between 2015 and 2017, with many of these evictions leading to demolitions. These demolitions often occur without adequate notice, consultation, or compensation, violating international human rights standards and Nigeria's own laws. The Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation reported that 90% of demolitions in Lagos between 2016 and 2017 did not follow due process. These statistics underscore the severe consequences of discriminatory demolitions, which exacerbate existing housing and service delivery challenges, further marginalizing vulnerable communities.
